Eden Park's ‘bit weird’ dimensions await India in ODI series opener
New Zealand and India will use the upcoming ODI series as an audition for this year's World Cup · BCCI

Even as several key are ruled out with injuries, New Zealand will want to build on their recent edge over India, having beaten them 2-1 in an ODI series in India earlier this year

Virat Kohli. Rohit Sharma.

That should take care of the SEO for this preview, and perhaps the ticket sales in New Zealand for the next fortnight too. It is also, more or less, how the series is being sold. This was meant to be a three-match series until New Zealand Cricket (NZC) asked for two more ODIs, and it is not hard to see why. When two of the biggest draws in the global game play only one format, you schedule as much of it as you can.

On paper, the now five-match series is also a staging post on the road to next year's World Cup in South Africa. A large chunk of India's first-choice side, though, lasts only as long as the series originally did. Three matches. Shubman Gill, the man who will lead India at the World Cup, then leaves to join the Test squad. KL Rahul also goes after the third game, and Nitish Kumar Reddy as soon as the first is done. By the fourth ODI, India will have a new captain, a new vice-captain and four new faces in the squad. It is World Cup preparation, but only part-time.

It is also hard to blame India's selectors. Test cricket is where the team has looked at its most vulnerable since the last generation started winding down, and it was New Zealand, of all teams, who first laid the cracks bare with a 3-0 whitewash, on seaming and turning pitches alike. In that light, it is no surprise that India are trying to balance getting the most out of the ODIs with preparing their players for an important Test series.

"Both [formats] are very important," Gill said. "If it was in my hands, the whole team, if all the players would have been fit, we would have played the entire squad we are planning to take to the World Cup. But the two Test matches are also very important. If the ODIs were scheduled before T20Is, we all could have played all the five ODIs. But right now, the gap between ODIs and Test series is very less, and the WTC scenario has also become very interesting."

New Zealand will want to build on their recent edge over India, having beaten them 2-1 in an ODI series in India earlier this year. They are without some key players, though, and the series may turn on a simpler question: whether India's vastly experienced batting can cover for a less experienced bowling attack, in unfamiliar conditions and on grounds small enough to punish every mistake. On that front, a lot may rest on the two names this preview began with.

When: 4 November 2026, 3:00 PM local / 7:30 AM IST

Where: Eden Park, Auckland

What to expect: Gill spoke about the good bounce that batters and bowlers alike enjoyed across venues in the T20I series, and expects something similar here. He acknowledged the "a bit weird" dimensions of Eden Park, and the cold, windy conditions that can make chasing against two new balls under lights a challenge, something he said was feedback from the T20I squad too. But he broke into a smile when talking about the straight boundaries, only 50-55 metres long, which he said made it "definitely very tempting" to go big. Mitchell Santner expects the conditions to be "bouncy" and "swirly", and revealed that the match will be played on a used surface.

Since January 2020, three of the four ODIs at Eden Park have been won by the team batting first. The average first-innings score in that period is 286.

Team news:

New Zealand: Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra will miss the entire ODI series. Devon Conway has been ruled out of the opening ODI after a collision in training with Matt Henry, who "seems okay" according to captain Mitchell Santner. It was also confirmed that Tim Seifert will swap in for Conway.

Probable XI: Tim Seifert, Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Latham (wk), Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell, Mitchell Santner (c), Nathan Smith, Kyle Jamieson, Jacob Duffy, Matt Henry

India: All eyes will be on whether Kuldeep Yadav makes the XI. His battle with Daryl Mitchell would be one to watch, and Gill has made no secret of wanting a bowler who can strike with the old ball in the middle overs. India have another option for that role in Gurnoor Brar, who’s tall and quick, and about whom Gill spoke glowingly in the pre-series press conference.

Probable XI: Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill (c), Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (vc), KL Rahul (wk), Axar Patel, Naman Dhir/Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mohammed Siraj, Gurnoor Brar, Arshdeep Singh

What they said:

"Playing late at night around 8, 9, 10 pm, the weather has been challenging. We are not used to playing in such windy conditions with such cold. It was a little cold here as well. The day there are a few clouds, the temperature drops to about 12, 13, 14 degrees. And with the wind, it feels quite cold. So adapting in those conditions is going to be the challenge." - Shubman Gill

"They're a great side, as we've seen. In New Zealand, even the T20 series, they adapted really quickly, and I think that's, you know, what we pride ourselves on is when we go overseas is adapting to conditions, and we're going to have to do the same here with, you know, five games being kind of all around the country." - Mitchell Santner
