In his second first-class match, Coburn hit headlines picking up 7 for 64 and helped his side defend a modest target of 245 against Northern Districts in the Plunkett Shield Trophy 2017-18. After such a promising start, Coburn underwhelmed a bit in his next 5 matches, finishing the season with 15 wickets. Primarily, a chinaman bowler, Coburn has the ability to wield willow in demanding situations too and noticing his talent, Canterbury awarded him contract for the 2018-19 season and escalated him to the T20 set-up as well.
