What the future of data analytics ought to be
Do all left-handed batters have an edge over all left-arm spinners? · BCCI/IPL

The current obsession with numbers and match-ups are not going to take cricket analysis forward. What might the next data revolution look like?

An over-rated use of data is the match-ups between batters and bowlers. These days you hardly see a left-arm spinner bowling to left-handers, because the guy sitting with the laptop will come up with a stat saying that a particular left-handed batter has a strike rate of 184 against left-arm spinners in this phase. This makes absolutely no sense to me because there are so many variables in the techniques of the batter and bowler concerned. Not all left-handed batters are the same.
