The players and the umpires make their way to the middle. The sun is shining brightly in Mirpur at present. Bishop to start off the proceedings today. A slip and a short leg in play. Here we go...
B0$ Interesting first day on offer yesterday. The pitch actually forced the players into an arm wrestle. They worked really hard. West Indies were disciplined at best, but Bangladesh hung in there and somehow got themselves into a good position. The pitch, I thought, had a few variables for the spinners as well as the fast bowlers in terms of up-and-down bounce. Now, if I focus on what I see here, there's a bit of rough. The fast bowlers running, especially from this end, have created that, and that will increase with this heat and the pitch wearing down. More footmarks. There'll be plenty for the bowlers to work with, especially the spinners, as the days go on. But this is where I really want to focus. A bit of green grass, and these cracks are a lot wider. Plenty of them in line with the stumps, and there are bare areas as well. So this tells me if the ball pitches here or there, it's got to behave differently. And we saw that yesterday, especially for the faster bowlers. Look at the uneven bounce that the fast bowlers do get from around here. That'll keep the batters guessing. That will always break their rhythm and question their footwork. I think the West Indies didn't go to this as long as they should have yesterday. This is where you start from, and then you try your other tricks.\n\nFirst of all, it's so crucial: six overs. A new batter has to play himself in, and then the second new ball. The West Indies have to throw everything into that first hour. If they can keep Bangladesh to around 325, they will still feel they are in this game.
Jomel Warrican: Once I had the ball in hand I had to be consistent and bowling attacking the stumps. So I try to keep it very simple, mix up my pace, and one thing I try to emphasize on is bowling a little quicker so the batsmen don't have enough time to adjust. (On whether they could have done anything different or better yesterday?) Obviously, we'd like to get more wickets, but I think as a team we stuck to our plans and we were disciplined, making sure the scoring didn't get away from us. So it's just about coming today now and improving on what we did yesterday and seeing if we get some wickets. (On some phases where they had to wait for the batters to make mistakes) Yes, definitely. It's a good wicket to bat on so far, so we just had to be patient and wait for something to happen. Nothing didn't happen, but we didn't try anything. So today now, we're coming with our new plans and seeing if we could execute as best as possible and get some wickets. (On what will be the key to their success this morning?) We definitely got to break the partnership early. Once we open up the doors, you never know what can happen from there, and continue getting wickets. And that will be the plan throughout the day.\n\n
Towhid Hridoy: (On how he is feeling now after an injury scare yesterday?) Yeah, that’s what. Now I am doing well. It was cramp, to be very honest. It’s happened, but as a professional player, we have to maintain ourselves. And that’s what I feel. (On their partnership) I know, I know that at that time, that situation, normally I used to bat in that kind of situation. And I just tried to follow my process, and we just discussed how to make one big partnership. (On his mindset while suffering from the cramp) Yeah, I tried. Before the cramp, I tried. But during the cramp, I tried, but I couldn’t. Hopefully, today is a new day. Hopefully, from here, we will start well, and we will make a big partnership and a big score as well.
B0$ West Indies began nicely with the new ball yesterday and didn't allow Bangladesh to find early rhythm in familiar conditions. Both Seales and Shamar were impressive early on. The hosts were troubled early on but ensured that they didn't allow much damage. Shadman's brilliant knock (99*) has given them some much-needed balance while his partner, Litton Das, has looked solid too. There was some turn and bounce for the spinners yesterday but nothing extravagant so far. A bit of variable bounce on the surface is what will keep the bowlers in play throughout. The second new ball is only 6 overs away and the West Indies will be eager to make it count. There's a chance of rain as the day progresses but let's hope it doesn't play spoilsport. An absorbing passage of play awaits us...
Shadman raised a fifty and continued to bat with solidity and found an able ally in Hridoy. The latter batted proactively and kept the scoreboard moving but a left hamstring issue while running between the wickets forced him off the field on a stretcher. Shadman carried on and was nearing his century when bad light stopped play. The game restarted but only 4 overs of play was possible before bad light intervened once again to halt proceedings. Shadman was stranded on 99
An intriguing opening day of Test match cricket in Mirpur as things stand on even terms. The West Indies were asked to bowl and they responded well on a slightly variable surface. The duo of Jayden Seales and Shamar Joseph bowled in probing channels with the new ball and kept the Bangaldesh opening batters on their toes. Seales nicked Tanzid off to the slip cordon. Shadman was jittery initially but grew in confidence as his innings progressed. Mominul looked good in his short stay before a lapse in concentration led to his downfall as Warrican struck off his second ball. Even Shanto couldn’t convert his start as he was trapped in front while attempting a sweep off Warrican (WI reviewed successfully).
B0$ The umpires have called it a day.
B0$ The umpire brings out the lightmeter again and takes a reading. Shamar is ready to bowl again but the umpire says that the light is not good enough for pacers to operate now.
