Ayush Mhatre suffers hamstring tear, set to be out for four-six weeks

The Mumbai vice-captain suffered the injury while batting in the first innings against Chandigarh in the Ranji Trophy 2026-27
Ayush Mhatre is set for four to six weeks on the sidelines after suffering a Grade 4 right hamstring tear. The Mumbai vice captain suffered the injury while batting in the first innings against Chandigarh in the opening round of the 2026-27 Ranji Trophy season. He did not field in either of the two Chandigarh innings, a game Mumbai won by an innings and 155 runs.
Mhatre felt the injury while completing a second run during his knock of 48. Incidentally, this was the 19-year-old's first competitive game back after a lengthy period on the sidelines. He suffered another hamstring injury (to the other leg) during IPL 2026 which ended his tournament. Subsequently, he spent three months rehabilitating at BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, where he suffered a right hamstring injury that has now recurred in his first game back.
"It seems that he will not be with the team for some time now," Mumbai captain Siddhesh Lad said after the Chandigarh game. "The way he was limping in the match, it does not look like he would be available for the second or the third match.
"It happened while running [between the wickets]...we had two or three simulations and club games and he also played at the BKC (Ground), and he was looking fine for the last three-four matches, but he felt something in his hamstring while taking a second run."
Mumbai are scheduled to play Himachal Pradesh in Dharamsala in the second round of games starting on October 18. They then play Haryana and Railways in the third and fourth rounds before the competition has a two-month break to accommodate the white-ball tournaments.
The 42-time Ranji champions will also miss Shardul Thakur (fractured finger) for the next round alongside Yashasvi Jaiswal, who'll travel with the India 'A' team to New Zealand. They will, however, welcome back Suryansh Shedge, who has completed his assignments with the 'A' team in the just-concluded home series against Australia 'A'.
