A technically sound batsman, Craig Cachopa, comes from a family of cricketers - with both brothers, Brad and Carl, also having played for Auckland with distinction. Born in South Africa, the Cachopa family migrated to New Zealand and found home in Auckland - the state which all three brothers would later go on and represent in cricket.

A right-handed batsman who can also keep wickets, the youngest Cachopa came into prominence at the tender age of 16 when he was named in New Zealand's Under-19 team. Two years later, in 2010, he was named as captain of the team to take part in the 2010 edition of Under-19 World Cup.

In a quirk of fate, Craig made his first-class debut for Wellington, in 2012, against Auckland - which included his brother Brad. However, he soon changed track to Auckland, where he would go on to play along side his brothers. In 2014, he was tempted to move across to England by Auckland's overseas player, Luke Wright. He signed up with Sussex with an intention to play for England in the near future, his Portuguese passport helping him qualify as a non-overseas player.

However, Craig quit Sussex, with whom he signed up in 2016 and returned to New Zealand and Auckland - signalling his intention to try and secure a long term future in New Zealand cricket.
