Overview

Carlton Baugh

Despite having played only a few number of matches, Carlton Baugh seems to have been in the West Indies squad for a long time. He made his Test debut in 2003, but after only managing to get 1 fifty in his first 5 games he was dropped and Dinesh Ramdin was brought into the squad. It was after 6 whole years that Baugh was brought into the West Indies team. He has gone on to cement his spot as the main wicketkeeper with some gritty displays with both bat and behind the stumps.

Baugh is an aggressive lower order batsman who can also bowl a bit. He has however made it to the national teams thanks to his wicketkeeping abilities. He hit back to back centuries early on in his career against Barbados and against Australia in a tour match to make everyone aware of his capabilities with the bat, but his performance with the national team, especially with the bat, left a lot to be desired. He was eventually replaced by Dinesh Ramdin.

His own poor form coupled with the good form of Dinesh Ramdin kept him out of the national Test team for more than 6 years. He was finally included in the Test squad for the tour to Sri Lanka in 2010. The subsequent series against Pakistan was a failure for Baugh but he made up for it with a spirited show against World Champions, India. His batting came to the fore in the 3rd Test helping his team reach a respectable total in the first innings with a hard fought 60 when his team were in dire straits.

However, Baugh did not make much of an impact in the home series against Australia as a result of which he was dropped for the tour to England in April 2012, while Ramdin was back. Since then, Ramdin has hung on as the primary keeper-batsman.
