India and Shubman Gill's record-breaking night

India secured their highest-ever ODI chase as Gill became the first captain to score a double hundred in both Tests and ODIs
Stats highlights from the second India-West Indies ODI in Guwahati.
A record chase
405 The target of 406 is the second highest in an ODI after South Africa’s famous chase of 435 at the Wanderers in 2006. Overall, this is the fourth time a team hunted down a 400+ target across all List A one dayers and second instance on Indian soil after Karnataka’s 413 against Jharkhand in Ahmedabad last December.
Highest successful chases in ODIs
Note: Netherlands win against West Indies in Harare came in a Super Over.
4 Instances of 800+ runs aggregated in an ODI, 811 being scored in Guwahati. The highest remains 872 in Johannesburg in 2006 followed by 825 between India and Sri Lanka in Rajkot in 2009.
Gill stands tall
223* by Gill is the third highest individual score in ODI cricket after Rohit Sharma’s 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014 and Martin Guptill’s unbeaten 237 against West Indies in World Cup 2015.
Highest individual scores in ODIs
2 Gill became the second batter to score a double in chases in ODIs after Glenn Maxwell, who made an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan at the Wankhede in World Cup 2023. Gill’s 223* is the highest ever in a run chase in all List A cricket, surpassing Soumya Sarkar’s unbeaten 208 in Dhaka Premier League in 2019.
117 balls by Gill to 200 makes it the fastest double hundred in ODIs, surpassing his teammate Ishan Kishan’s 126-ball effort against Bangladesh in Chattogram. Overall, 117 balls makes it the joint fourth fastest double hundred in all List A cricket (where balls details are available).
1 Gill became the first captain to register double hundreds in both Tests as well as ODIs - following his 269 against England in Birmingham last year. Rohit Sharma and Virender Sehwag are the other batter to scale the 200-mark while leading the side in ODIs.
Batters day out
5 Guwahati ODI was the first instance of five batters registering three-figure scores in an ODI. The previous most was four each: Pakistan vs Australia in Lahore, 1998; India vs Australia in Nagpur, 2013 and Sri Lanka vs Pakistan in Hyderabad, 2023. This was the second time it happened in a List A game, the first being in the Vijay Hazare trophy encounter between Baroda and Hyderabad in Rajkot in 2025.
282 innings taken by Rohit Sharma to 12,000 ODI runs makes him the seventh batter and second quickest to the landmark after Virat Kohli who reached there in 242 innings. In terms of balls faced, Rohit is the second quickest to get there (12973 balls), behind Kohli (12853 balls).
255 The opening stand of 255 between Rohit and Gill is the second highest opening partnership for India, only behind 258 by Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly against Kenya in Paarl in 2001. It also happens to be the highest partnership for any wicket for India in a run chase and the highest against West Indies in ODIs.
West Indies at the receiving end
3 Three West Indies batters – John Campbell, Shai Hope, and Amir Jangoo – scored hundreds in the first innings, the sixth such instance in ODIs. Overall, it has happened 11 times in List A cricket but West Indies became the first side to end on the losing side.
405/7 by West Indies is their highest total in ODI cricket surpassing 389 they made against England in St George’s in 2019 – another match where the ended on the wrong side of the result. West Indies became the first team to end up on the losing side thrice in ODIs after scoring 370+.
6319 Kuldeep Yadav became the first left-arm wrist spinner to get to the 200-wicket milestone in ODIs when he dismissed Keemo Paul in his final over. Kuldeep reached there in 6319 balls, the third quickest among spinners behind Saqlain Mushtaq (5451) and Rashid Khan (5782). He reached there in 123 ODIs, second fastest for India behind Mohammed Shami (104 matches).
