Jaker Ali and Nayeem Hasan’s unbroken 26-run stand took Bangladesh to 79/6 at stumps on Day 3

On a day when 12 wickets fell, and the surface showed plenty of turn, Bangladesh pushed their lead past 100 in the first Test against West Indies.

Play ended around half past four, with bad light forcing early stumps in Mirpur. By then, West Indies had reduced Bangladesh to 79/6 in the second innings. Skipper Roston Chase took three of those wickets, supported by Jomel Warrican, who took two more to extend his match tally to seven.

By the end of Day 3, Jaker Ali, concussion substitute for Mominul Haque, and No.8 Nayeem Hasan put together an unbeaten 26-run stand, a valuable late partnership that could become crucial in the context of the game.

Earlier, Nayeem ran through West Indies’s lower order to secure a slender 27-run lead for Bangladesh. The tourists, who began the day on 134/4, had moved to 234/6, before a collapse ensued. Bangladesh didn’t immediately take the second new ball, as Nayeem claimed three of the last four wickets to fall, also ticking past 50 Test wickets.

Chase eventually ran out of partners, having earlier forged a 51-run stand with Justin Greaves (46). Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who resumed from his overnight score of 43, was dismissed for 56 by Shoriful Islam as the first wicket of the day. Joshua Bishop hit three fours in a rapid debut knock, but his dismissal kickstarted the collapse, as they went from 234/6 to 245 all out.

Chase was in the thick of action with the ball, on a surface showing increased amount of turn as the day passed. But the breakthrough came two balls into the innings, when Tanzid Hasan edged to gully off Shamar Joseph. With no time to lose, Chase brought himself on just six overs in. The 11th over proved to be a crucial one.

Chase bowled a double-wicket maiden: he cleaned up Shadman Islam, while Towhid Hridoy was caught after miscuing a tossed up delivery. The West Indies captain went on to dismiss his opposite number, with Shanto eventually wasting a review to re-check the lbw. Litton Das did the same when Warrican had him trapped in front.

With Bangladesh desperately requiring some resistance, Mehidy Hasan Miraz dug in for 31 balls for his nine, but was dismissed when a Warrican special knocked over his stumps. Jaker then combined with Nayeem to end the day without any more damage, stretching the lead to 106.

Brief scores: Bangladesh 272 & 79/6 (Jaker Ali 18*, Nayeem Hasan 18*; Roston Chase 3-25, Jomel Warrican 2-19) lead West Indies (Tagenarine Chanderpaul 56, Roston Chase 46*; Nayeem Hasan 4-33, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 2-65) by 106 runs.
