Zimbabwe secured a commanding 99-run victory over Bangladesh in the opening match of the ODI tri-series at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Veterans Craig Ervine (93) and Brendan Taylor (81) pulled Zimbabwe out of a hole with a 150-run stand to help post a respectable 271/8 before the bowlers choked Bangladesh inside 34 overs.

Zimbabwe opted to bat first but suffered an early blow when Taskin Ahmed delivered a fiery opening spell, reducing them to 24 for 3 inside seven overs by dismissing Brian Bennett, Ben Curran, and Tafadzwa Tsiga. However, Taylor and Ervine mounted a crucial recovery with their mammoth partnership for the fourth wicket. Taylor hit 81 off 101 balls, while Ervine anchored the innings with a top score of 93 off 106 balls.

Saif Hassan got Bangladesh the much-needed wicket of Taylor to break the stubborn stand, and followed it quickly with that of Sikandar Raza. Late cameos from lower-order batters Newman Nyamhuri (21* off 17) and Wellington Masakadza (21* off 15) propelled Zimbabwe to a competitive total of 271 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs. Taskin was the standout bowler for Bangladesh, picking up 3 for 44 in his 10 overs, while Saif and Shoriful Islam chipped in with two apiece.

In response, Bangladesh got off to an aggressive start through Tanzid Hasan Tamim, who struck a quickfire 46 off 38 balls with nine boundaries and a six. However, once Blessing Muzarabani removed Soumya Sarkar for 9 and Newman Nyamhuri dismissed Tanzid in the tenth over, Bangladesh suffered a collapse.

Brad Evans broke through Bangladesh's middle and lower order, taking 4 for 45, while spin duo Masakadza and Raza restricted the scoring, sharing three wickets between them. Regular strikes in the middle overs never allowed Bangladesh to build any momentum back for a recovery. The best partnership they could manage thereafter was of 32 runs between Rishad Hossain and Taskin for the ninth wicket, but it was too little too late for Bangladesh.

They were eventually bundled out for 172 in 33.4 overs, handing Zimbabwe a comfortable win.

Brief scores: Zimbabwe 271/8 in 50 overs (Craig Ervine 93, Brendan Taylor 81; Taskin Ahmed 3-44) beat Bangladesh 172 all out in 33.4 overs (Tanzid Hasan Tamim 46; Brad Evans 4-45, Wellington Masakadza 2-18) by 99 runs
