Jangoo ton gives West Indies a strong start in Sylhet
West Indies recovered from a precarious position to finish strongly on the opening day
Amir Jangoo continued his dream run in the subcontinent, following his successful limited-overs tour of India with a century on Day 1 of the opening Test against Bangladesh in Sylhet. The 29-year-old finished unbeaten on 111 at stumps, batting with Justin Greaves who walked off undefeated on 35. West Indies ended the day on 235/4 in 70 overs, after bad light ate into a few overs at the end.
It wasn't all rosy for the visitors. They found themselves in a quagmire after a probing first hour where Taskin Ahmed took out openers Brandon King and Joshua da Silva while Hasan Mahmud accounted for the wicket of Kavem Hodge. West Indies slipped to 27/3 in just the ninth over and were in desperate need of a reviving stand.
That came through Jangoo and Kevin Wickham, whose first order of business was to drag the side to the drinks break, and Lunch without any further damage. They pulled that off, pushing West Indies to 86/3 at the break.
The pair carried on after Lunch, and batted together for 41.3 overs. During the alliance, they added 131 runs with Wickham reaching his half-century.
Against the run of play, Mahmud managed to break through as he beat Wickham on the outside edge to clean him up after his patient 61. Jangoo then got to his second Test hundred in the company of Greaves, who stayed on until the end of the day's play.
Brief Scores: West Indies 235/4 (Amir Jangoo 111, Kevin Wickham 61; Hasan Mahmud 2-58, Taskin Ahmed 2-61) vs Bangladesh
