Overview

Mosharraf Hossain

Left arm spinners and Bangladesh cricket go hand in hand. Mosharraf Hossain is no different. Due to many reasons, Mosharraf couldn't replicate his good domestic performances in the international arena. Born in the capital city, Dhaka, Hossain is a slow left arm orthodox spinner who was seen to be the successor of Mohammad Rafique.

He made his first-class debut for Dhaka division in the 2001-02 season. In March 2008, he was selected for the home ODI series against South Africa. Mosharraf played all the matches, but didn't contribute substantially, which led to him being dropped from the national team. Later that year, Hossain and 12 players played for Dhaka warriors in the rebel T20 tournament - Indian Cricket League. The Bangladesh Cricket Board banned all the players as the league wasn't authorized by the ICC. In 2009, the BCB lifted the ban after the players quit the ICL, which allowed Mosharraf to make a first-class comeback in 2010.

In the 2013 edition of the Bangladesh Premier League, Mosharraf was the man of the match in the all-important final against Chittagong. Playing for Dhaka Gladiators, he finished with figures of 3/26 off his four overs. He was banned for eight months after the BPL investigation, but was later cleared of doing any malpractice.

Mosharraf continued to be consistent in the domestic circuit and that eventually led to him being called for the ODI series against Afghanistan in 2016. The southpaw got to play an international match after a gap of more than eight years and didn't disappoint the selectors. In the decider against Afghanistan, he scalped three wickets, which helped his team clinch a series win. In the very next home series against England, he had one poor outing with the ball and was dropped from the playing eleven. With the age factor against him, and finger spinners available in large numbers in Bangladesh, it will be a tough task for Mosharraf to make another comeback.
